Learners engage with their work by choice, not through coercion.
Elements of a Consent-Based Approach
- Learners (and all community members) show up voluntarily or not at all. If LLC is not what you are looking for, we respect your choice— no hard feelings!
- When working together, the Learners and staff/community/volunteers practice a consensus-based decision-making process which ensures that every participant has a say in the focus of study.
- Once an agreement has been reached, the group explores a topic that is of interest to everybody and can support everyone in meeting their own needs and goals.
- In virtual programs, Learners can request and engage in study of their own choosing, and groups are self-organizing by topic/interest.
- Staff/community/volunteers ensure that Learners are well-resourced and supported in their pursuits and making progress toward their individualized learning objectives with access to appropriate materials.
- Learners engage with their work because it is something they have chosen, and it is something they want to do, not because they are coerced.
Benefits of a Consent-Based Approach
- Learners have the opportunity to practice autonomy and agency in an environment where their boundaries are respected.
- By enhancing Learners' control and agency over how and what they learn, they become more empowered as individuals and build confidence to carry into the rest of their lives.
- Honoring boundaries and prioritizing consent is essential to a wellness-centered (and trauma-informed) approach.
